About this tool

Automatic mode uses Google's MediaPipe selfie segmentation model, which was trained on photos of people. It works best on portraits and people and can struggle with products, animals, or objects. The model and its runtime are downloaded from public CDNs (jsDelivr and Google Cloud Storage) the first time you use it, but your image is processed on your device and never uploaded. Solid-colour mode samples the background colour (from the corners, or from a point you click) and makes similar pixels transparent. Threshold controls how similar a colour must be, and Feather softens the edge.

Limits

  • Automatic mode uses a selfie model trained on people. Products, animals, and objects often cut incorrectly.
  • The model and its WebAssembly runtime are downloaded from public CDNs (jsDelivr and Google Cloud Storage) the first time. The photo itself is not uploaded.
  • Fine hair and transparent objects can leave a halo. The result is a PNG, not a layered design file.

How to use it

  1. Choose a photo.
  2. For people, keep Automatic mode and wait for the model to load the first time.
  3. For a plain background, switch to Solid colour, click the background, and adjust Threshold and Feather.
  4. Download the result as a PNG with transparency.

  • Profile and ID-style photos
  • Cut-outs for slides and posters
  • Preparing a subject for a new background

Examples

  • Profile photo

    A head-and-shoulders portrait on any background usually gives a clean cut-out in Automatic mode.

  • Product on white

    A mug photographed on a white sweep works better in Solid colour mode: click the white area and raise Threshold until the background disappears.

  • Fine hair

    Wispy hair and transparent objects are hard for any model. Expect some halo around them.

FAQ

Why was part of my subject removed?
The automatic model is designed for people. For objects, use Solid colour mode, or photograph the object on a plain contrasting background.
Is my photo uploaded to an AI service?
No. Only the model files are downloaded. Segmentation runs in your browser on your device.
Why must the result be PNG?
JPEG has no transparency. PNG keeps the transparent background so you can place the cut-out on anything.
Why is the first run slow?
The model and runtime have to be downloaded once. Later runs in the same session are faster.
