About this tool
A word is a run of letters or digits in any script. An apostrophe or hyphen between letters keeps it together, so "don't" and "well-known" each count once. Punctuation, symbols, and emoji on their own are not words. Characters are counted as Unicode code points, and a second figure excludes all whitespace. Sentences are split after . ! ? (and the Arabic ؟), and paragraphs are separated by blank lines.
How to use it
- Paste your draft into the editor, or start typing.
- Read the word and character totals at the top. Sentences, paragraphs, lines, and time estimates are listed below them.
- Edit the text in place. The counts update on every keystroke.
When to use it
- Checking essay or assignment word limits
- Keeping meta descriptions and social posts within length
- Estimating how long a talk or voice-over script will run
