Understanding Reading Time
â4 min readâ labels are estimates built from word count and an assumed reading speed. They help readers skim a catalog of articles; they are not stopwatch guarantees.
Basic estimate
Many blogs use something near 200â250 words per minute for silent adult reading of straightforward prose in a familiar language. Technical material, dense footnotes, or a second language can cut effective speed dramatically.
Example at 225 WPM
| Words | Estimated minutes |
|---|---|
| 450 | 2 |
| 900 | 4 |
| 1,350 | 6 |
| 2,250 | 10 |
What the estimate ignores
- Images, videos, and code blocks that pause the reader.
- Skimming versus careful study.
- Accessibility needs and dyslexia-friendly pacing.
- Whether âwordsâ matched the platformâs counter exactly.
Using it well
Treat reading time as a relative signalâlonger than the next article, shorter than a white paperânot as a SLA for comprehension. If you publish, state your WPM assumption when readers will care.
SmartKitioâs reading time calculator derives an estimate from the text you provide and the speed assumption shown in the tool. Pair it with the word counter when you want the underlying tally.
