How to Clean and Normalize Text
Pasted text arrives with invisible spaces, blank lines, mixed line endings, and noisy casing. A short cleanup pass prevents broken CSV imports, ugly emails, and flaky “unique line” lists.
A reliable cleanup order
- Trim leading and trailing whitespace on each line (or the whole block).
- Remove empty lines if you need a dense list.
- Normalize case only if comparison or import rules require it.
- Deduplicate lines after normalization so “Apple” and “apple” can collapse when you intend that.
- Sort only after the set of lines is semantically final.
What “normalize” can mean
- Whitespace: collapse double spaces, strip trailing tabs.
- Unicode: NFC/NFKC forms (advanced; not always needed for casual cleanup).
- Line endings: treat CRLF and LF as the same when splitting lines.
- Case folding: lowercasing before uniqueness checks.
When not to over-clean
Poetry, code, and legal quotations can lose meaning if you strip spaces or line breaks aggressively. Keep a raw copy until you confirm the cleaned version still says what you need.
SmartKitio’s text utilities (trim, empty-line removal, dedupe, find/replace, sort) run locally so pasted lists never need to leave your device for cleanup.
