Paragraph Counter
Count the paragraphs in a draft to check structure, for example when an assignment or brief asks for a set number of paragraphs.
Your text stays in your browser.
About this tool
A paragraph is a block of text separated from the next one by at least one blank line. A single line break inside a block does not start a new paragraph. Blank lines that contain only spaces still count as separators, and empty blocks are ignored.
How to use it
- Paste your text, keeping the blank lines between paragraphs.
- Read the paragraph count in the summary.
- If the count is 1, check that your paragraphs are separated by an empty line rather than a single line break.
Words ≈ sequences of letters/numbers
Reading time = words / 200 per minute
Examples
Two paragraphs
"First block.", an empty line, then "Second block." counts as 2 paragraphs.
Line breaks only
Three lines with no empty line between them count as 1 paragraph but 3 lines.
FAQ
Why does my text show only one paragraph?
Some editors copy paragraphs with a single line break instead of a blank line. Add an empty line between paragraphs, or use the Line Counter if single breaks are what you want to count.
Are headings counted as paragraphs?
Yes, if they are separated by blank lines. The counter has no concept of headings.
Is my text stored?
No. The text exists only in this browser tab.
