Sentence Counter

Count how many sentences your text contains and compare it with the word count to spot overly long sentences.

Your text stays in your browser.

About this tool

A new sentence starts after a period, question mark, or exclamation mark (including the Arabic question mark ؟) that is followed by whitespace. Text with no ending punctuation still counts as one sentence. Abbreviations such as "e.g." or "Dr." followed by a space are treated as sentence ends, so the count can be slightly high for text that uses many of them.

How to use it

  1. Paste or type your text.
  2. Read the sentence count next to the word total.
  3. Divide words by sentences to get your average sentence length.
Average sentence length = words ÷ sentences

Examples

  • Three sentences

"It rained. We stayed in! Did you?" is 3 sentences and 7 words, an average of about 2.3 words per sentence.

  • Abbreviations

"Meet Dr. Lee at noon." counts as 2 sentences, because "Dr." is followed by a space.

FAQ

Why is my sentence count higher than expected?
Abbreviations and initials followed by a space ("Mr. Smith", "U.S. law") are read as sentence endings. Numbers such as 3.5 are not split because there is no space after the dot.
Does it handle ellipses?
Three dots followed by a space end a sentence, the same as a period. The single ellipsis character (…) does not, so text that uses it can show fewer sentences.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. All counting happens in your browser.
