About this tool

The URL is parsed with the browser's URL parser, which lowercases the scheme and host and normalizes the path encoding. The #fragment is removed because it is never sent to servers. Query parameters are kept as entered, so remove tracking parameters yourself before generating the tag. A canonical tag is a strong hint, not a command: search engines may choose a different canonical if other signals disagree.

How to use it

  1. Paste the preferred URL of the page.
  2. Check the normalized URL in the output.
  3. Copy the <link> tag into the page <head>.

Should a page point canonical to itself?
Yes. A self-referencing canonical is a common, safe default.
Can a canonical point to another domain?
Yes, for syndicated content, but only when the pages are truly equivalent.
What if the URL is invalid?
No tag is produced. Include the scheme, for example https://.
