About this calculator
Basal metabolic rate is an estimate of calories burned at complete rest. The Mifflin-St Jeor equation is a widely used estimate for adults from age, sex, height, and weight.
How to calculate
Enter sex, age, height, and weight. The result is calories per day at rest. Multiply by an activity factor in the calorie calculator to estimate daily needs.
Men: 10W + 6.25H − 5A + 5
Women: 10W + 6.25H − 5A − 161
W in kg, H in cm, A in years
Examples
30-year-old woman, 65 kg, 165 cm
BMR ≈ 10×65 + 6.25×165 − 5×30 − 161 = 1,372 kcal/day.
FAQ
Is BMR the same as TDEE?
No. BMR is rest only. TDEE multiplies BMR by an activity factor to estimate a typical day.
Why Mifflin-St Jeor?
It is a commonly used adult estimate and tends to be more accurate than older Harris-Benedict versions for many people.
