Understanding Ratios and Proportions
A ratio compares two quantities in the same kind of unit—parts of a recipe, seats in a room, or shares of a bill. A proportion states that two ratios are equal. Those ideas sit underneath scale drawings, mixture problems, and many “fair share” calculations.
Writing a ratio
The ratio of 8 red tiles to 12 blue tiles can be written 8:12 or 8/12. Both forms mean the same comparison. Order matters: 8:12 is not the same statement as 12:8.
Simplifying
Divide both parts by their greatest common divisor. 8:12 becomes 2:3. The simplified ratio keeps the same relationship with smaller integers.
Splitting a total
To divide a total T in the ratio a:b, form a + b parts, then give each side its share.
Solving a proportion
If a:b = c:x and a ≠ 0, cross-multiply: a × x = b × c, so x = (b × c) ÷ a.
Ratio vs percentage
A ratio 1:3 means one part against three parts (four parts in total), so the first quantity is 25% of the whole. Percentages fix the whole at 100; ratios keep both sides visible without forcing that scale.
SmartKitio’s ratio calculator can simplify, split a total, or solve for a missing term. Zero terms are rejected where they would make the operation undefined.
