How to Calculate Percentage Difference
Percentage change asks how a value moved from a known starting point. Percentage difference asks how far apart two values are when neither is the âoriginal.â Laboratories, A/B summaries, and rough comparisons often need the second idea.
Percentage change needs a baseline
If yesterdayâs price was $80 and todayâs is $100, percentage change from yesterday is ((100 â 80) á 80) Ă 100 = 25%. The baseline is clear: yesterday.
Percentage difference uses the midpoint
When you only have two peer valuesâtwo measurements, two quotes, two batch yieldsâthere is no privileged start. A common convention divides the absolute gap by the average of the two values.

Change vs difference for 80 and 100
| Measure | Baseline | Result |
|---|---|---|
| % change (80 â 100) | 80 | +25% |
| % change (100 â 80) | 100 | â20% |
| % difference | midpoint 90 | â22.22% |
When to prefer which
- Use percentage change for growth, decline, discounts from a list price, or anything with a clear before/after.
- Use percentage difference for symmetric comparisons where labeling one value as âbeforeâ would be arbitrary.
- If one value can be zero, percentage change is undefined; percentage difference with a zero peer also collapsesâreport absolute difference instead.
SmartKitioâs percentage calculator focuses on the three everyday modes (of, reverse, and change). For midpoint difference, apply the formula aboveâor compute the average with the average calculator, then finish the arithmetic by hand.
